工程计算理论公式

Essential Transformer Sizing & FLA Formulas

Standard electrical calculation equations per IEC 60076, IEEE C57.12, and national electrical codes (NEC 450).

Three-Phase Transformer Formulas

Used for 3-phase industrial, commercial, and utility substation transformers:

$$I_{\text{FLA}} = \frac{S_{\text{kVA}} \times 1000}{\sqrt{3} \times V_{\text{LL}}} \approx \frac{S_{\text{kVA}} \times 1000}{1.73205 \times V_{\text{LL}}}$$

To calculate apparent power (kVA) from measured voltage and current:

$$S_{\text{kVA}} = \frac{\sqrt{3} \times V_{\text{LL}} \times I_{\text{Amps}}}{1000}$$
  • $S_{\text{kVA}}$ = Transformer apparent power rating in kilovolt-amperes.
  • $V_{\text{LL}}$ = Line-to-line RMS voltage (e.g., 400V, 480V, 11000V).
  • $I_{\text{FLA}}$ = Full Load Current in amperes (A).

Single-Phase Transformer & Fault Current Formulas

Single-phase distribution units (pole-mounted or residential pads):

$$I_{\text{FLA}} = \frac{S_{\text{kVA}} \times 1000}{V_{\text{LN}}} \quad \Longleftrightarrow \quad S_{\text{kVA}} = \frac{V_{\text{LN}} \times I_{\text{Amps}}}{1000}$$

Secondary symmetrical short-circuit current ($I_{sc}$):

$$I_{sc} = \frac{I_{\text{FLA}}}{\%Z} \times 100 = \frac{I_{\text{FLA}}}{Z_{\text{pu}}}$$
  • $I_{sc}$ = Maximum symmetrical short-circuit current at transformer secondary terminals.
  • $\%Z$ = Nameplate impedance percentage (e.g. 4.0%, 5.0%, 6.25%).
  • Essential for sizing circuit breaker breaking capacity ($I_{cu} / I_{cs}$).

* Calculated via $I = S / V$. Covers pole-mounted distribution transformers and residential single-phase step-down applications.

Overcurrent Protection Sizing Multipliers (NEC 450.3 / IEC 60364)

Location Circuit Breaker Max % Fuse Rating Max %
Primary (No secondary protection) 125% of Primary FLA 125% of Primary FLA
Primary (With 125% secondary protection) 250% of Primary FLA 300% of Primary FLA
Secondary Protection (Main Breaker) 125% of Secondary FLA 125% of Secondary FLA

Tip: Sizing primary protection at 200%-250% when secondary protection is present prevents nuisance tripping during transformer energization inrush current (typically 8x-12x FLA for 0.1s).

Standard Transformer Impedance (%Z) Benchmarks

Capacity (kVA) IEC 60076 Standard %Z ANSI / IEEE C57 Standard %Z
Up to 630 kVA 4.00% 2.00% – 4.50%
800 kVA to 1250 kVA 5.00% 4.50% – 5.75%
1600 kVA to 2500 kVA 6.25% 5.75% – 6.50%
3150 kVA to 6300 kVA 7.00% – 8.00% 6.50% – 7.50%

Higher %Z reduces fault currents ($I_{sc}$) but increases voltage drop under load. XinHuan custom-engineers impedance to match project short-circuit withstand specifications.

变压器计算与选型常见问题

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Essential engineering clarifications for sizing, full-load calculations, and installation compliance.

In a balanced three-phase system, total power is the sum of all three phases: $P_{\text{total}} = 3 \times V_{\text{phase}} \times I_{\text{phase}}$. Because standard industrial nameplates specify Line-to-Line Voltage ($V_{\text{LL}}$) rather than phase voltage, and $V_{\text{LL}} = \sqrt{3} \times V_{\text{phase}}$, substituting yields: $P = 3 \times (V_{\text{LL}} / \sqrt{3}) \times I = \sqrt{3} \times V_{\text{LL}} \times I$. Thus, multiplying line voltage by $\sqrt{3} \approx 1.73205$ accurately reflects three-phase apparent power.

Continuous loads (running for 3 hours or more without interruption) should not exceed 80% of transformer rated nameplate kVA. Operating continuously at 100% accelerates winding hot-spot degradation and shortens transformer design lifespan. Intermittent peak loads (such as motor direct-on-line starting) can safely utilize the transformer's thermal time constant (typically 120% to 150% overload for short durations per IEC 60076-7 loading guides).

First, compute the circuit design current $I_b = 1.25 \times I_{\text{FLA}}$. Then, select conductor size from standard ampacity tables (IEC 60364-5-52 or NEC Table 310.16) applying de-rating factors for:
  • Ambient temperature ($C_a$)
  • Grouping / conduit bundling ($C_g$)
  • Installation method (in-air, buried, ladder tray)
  • Maximum allowable voltage drop ($\le 3\%$ for branch circuits, $\le 5\%$ total).

Transformer impedance (%Z) limits maximum fault current. For example, a 1000 kVA 400V transformer ($I_{\text{FLA}} = 1443.4\text{ A}$) with $4.0\%Z$ yields a symmetrical fault current of $1443.4 / 0.04 = 36.1\text{ kA}$. With a higher $6.0\%Z$, the fault current drops to $1443.4 / 0.06 = 24.1\text{ kA}$. Therefore, downstream switchgear and circuit breakers must have an ultimate breaking capacity ($I_{cu}$) exceeding this calculated prospective fault current.
