Engineering Notes

  • No-load loss is present whenever the transformer is energized, even with no load connected.
  • Load loss rises approximately with the square of load current: loss at 50% load is about 25% of rated load loss.
  • For 24/7 utility or industrial operation, a lower-loss transformer can recover a higher purchase price through reduced energy loss.
  • Final guarantees should be based on the transformer routine test report and the project standard, such as IEC 60076 or ANSI/IEEE C57.12.

How to Use Loss Values

What Numbers Should You Enter?

Use guaranteed no-load and load-loss values from a manufacturer datasheet, tender document, or routine test report. If you only know capacity and voltage, send the project data to XinHuan and we can recommend an appropriate loss level.

No-Load Loss P0

Core loss in watts. It depends on core material and is present whenever the transformer is energized.

Load Loss Pk

Copper/winding loss at rated current. Actual load loss is Pk multiplied by load ratio squared.

Average Load

Use expected average operating load, not only peak load. Energy cost depends heavily on this value.

Transformer Loss Capitalization & TCO Formula

When international electric utilities and EPC contractors evaluate transformer tenders, the lowest bid price is rarely the winning bid. Modern procurement uses Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Loss Capitalization to evaluate the true financial cost over a 25 to 30 year operating lifespan.

Standard Utility TCO Evaluation Formula

TCO = Purchase Price + (A × P0) + (B × Pk)
  • P0 (No-Load Iron Loss): Constant core loss measured in kW or Watts, energized 8,760 hours/year.
  • Pk (Load Copper Loss): Winding I²R loss at rated current measured in kW or Watts.
  • A-Factor ($/W or $/kW): Capitalized present value penalty per Watt of no-load loss ($4.00 – $10.00 / Watt).
  • B-Factor ($/W or $/kW): Capitalized present value penalty per Watt of load loss ($1.20 – $3.50 / Watt).

Because A-Factor is typically 3× to 5× higher than B-Factor, reducing core loss (P0) by upgrading to laser-scribed high-grade silicon steel (S13/S22/SCB14) delivers massive long-term OPEX returns for continuous utility operations.

Global Utility Capitalization Factors (Typical)

Grid / Utility Region A-Factor (No-Load) B-Factor (Load) Evaluation Life
North America (IEEE C57) $6.50 – $9.50 / W $2.00 – $3.80 / W 30 Years
European Union (Ecodesign Tier 2) €7.00 – €11.00 / W €1.80 – €3.20 / W 25–30 Years
Sub-Saharan Africa & MENA $4.50 – $7.20 / W $1.40 – $2.60 / W 25 Years
Asia-Pacific (State Grid / SE Asia) $5.00 – $8.00 / W $1.50 – $2.80 / W 25 Years

* Exact A and B factors are defined in tender tender specifications based on discount interest rate (\(i\)), electricity cost ($/kWh), and planned loading factor.
